The term "bodybuilding" was first used in 1881 by Robert Roberts, a member of the staff at the Boston YMCA. He also developed the exercise classes that led to today's fitness workouts.
Jazzercise, a famous aerobic exercise program for women, was started in 1969 in Evanston, Ill., by a dancer, Judi Missett. Missett began teaching Jazzercise® in 1972 at the La Jolla, (CA) YMCA.

Health & Wellness

The Wellness Center

YMCAs have been a leader in community-based health and wellness for more than a century.  The Upper Bucks YMCA continues to support the approach to health that “spirit, mind and body" are all necessary and eternal part of the person. Participation in YMCA health and wellness programs offer opportunities for friendship and community, a sense of well-being, self-confidence, and improved mental and cognitive health - not to mention the obvious benefits of healthy hearts, lungs, bones and muscles.

Wellness Center

Our Wellness Center, located at our Fairview Avenue facility in Quakertown, is open to full privilege members – men, women and youth 13+ (youth must receive a recommendation by our fitness staff). Youth, ages 13 – 14, are permitted to work out in the center only after completing an orientation and must be accompanied by an adult (age 21 or older). Our Wellness Center is staffed 7 days a week to assist members.

General Wellness Center Rules

  1. To ensure a comfortable atmosphere for everyone, please be respectful of others.
  2. Foul language will not be tolerated.
  3. Please wear proper fitness attire. Street clothing (jeans, cutoffs, sandals, boots, etc.) restricts movement and is damaging to the equipment.
  4. Please remove weights from bars and machines and return them to the proper racks.
  5. Please wipe down equipment after use with supplied cleaner and paper towels.
  6. Use spotters when needed.

Fitness Orientations

Full-Privilege members are strongly encouraged to take advantage of our FREE fitness orientation. During your orientation, you will be shown how to use the cardio and Cybex weight equipment properly and safely. Please stop by the Welcome Center to sign up for your orientation.

Cardio Sign-Up

Full-Privilege members who want to use the cardio equipment (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, etc.) must sign up for a time slot on the individual equipment clipboards located on the back wall of the Wellness Center. Members may sign up for a maximum time of 30 minutes per machine to allow others to use the equipment.

Fitness Classes

We offer a variety of fitness classes. Some of our most popular classes include: Body Sculpting, Yoga, Zumba, Spinning, Pilates and BOSU. We also offer step classes and SilverSneakers®.
